Hood to Coast 2023
On August 25th and 26th the club fielded a team for the Hood to Coast run. It’s a 196 mile relay race from Mt. Hood to Seaside, run with 12 people on a team. The event has sold out - on opening day - for the last 24 years!
The club has fielded teams for this event before though not in the last few years. We were able to get a good mix of alumni years on the team - from a ‘69 all the way through to two ‘23’s. We weren't trying to run a competitive team - we were just trying to finish and have a good time while doing it.
The event kicked off early Friday morning at 6:25 AM on Mt. Hood. They stagger the team start times to reduce congestion along the race. We ran through the night - switching off between the two vans of runners - and finished the afternoon of the next day. Our finish time was 32h 2m for an average pace of 9:47; this put us in the top half of our division (mixed open) - a really pretty good result for a non-competitive team; eclecticedgeracing.overallraceresults.com/overall-results/753.
Ironically we shared our start time with “The Geisel Geese” - a team with 3-4 Dartmouth alums themselves. And several additional alums introduced themselves to us at the race finish at Seaside - probably wondering why so many people were wandering around wearing Dartmouth gear :)
Thanks to Carolyn ‘90 and Laura ‘96 for offering up their houses in Portland for our first rest stop; David ‘69, Joe T’20, and Gokul ‘23 for driving the vans; and Peter, Jon, and Neha ‘27 for volunteering for the event!
